Title: The Oxford English Literary History Volume 12 1960 to 2000. The Last of England

Summary: It offers a comprehensive mapping of English literature in England in the late twentieth century — a period less often covered in one volume in such depth.

It places literature in context: not as isolated aesthetic objects but as shaped by historical, cultural, institutional forces (television, publishing, theory, empire, class, gender). This makes the volume useful for understanding how literature both responds to and helps shape its times.

It challenges the narrative of decline (the “end of England”) by showing the renewal, diversification, and vitality of English literary culture through this period — though always with attention to change, fracture, and transformation.

It’s structured to allow both specialists (in poetry, drama, fiction) and generalists (students of the period) to get a clear sense of developments across genres.
