Title: The Registrum Antiquissimum of the Cathedral Church of Lincoln Vol IX by Kathleen Major. The Lincoln Record Society Vol 62

Language: English. Language

Summary: The Registrum Antiquissimum of the Cathedral Church of Lincoln, Volume IX (1968) is the ninth volume in the scholarly edition of the medieval cartulary of Lincoln Cathedral. Edited by Kathleen Major, it continues the publication of one of England's most important collections of medieval charters.

Volume IX contains documents 2390–2666 from the Registrum Antiquissimum, focusing primarily on the properties and rights of the Cathedral Chapter within the city of Lincoln. Unlike earlier volumes, which covered estates scattered across the vast medieval Diocese of Lincoln, this volume concentrates on urban property, rents, tenements, churches, and legal rights in the cathedral city itself.

The charters, mostly dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, document:

  • Grants and confirmations of houses, shops, and plots of land in Lincoln.
  • Transactions involving cathedral prebends, canons, and local citizens.
  • Property boundaries, rents, and obligations owed to the cathedral.
  • Disputes and settlements over ownership and rights.
  • The development of Lincoln's urban landscape and economy.
  • Relationships between the cathedral chapter, bishops, kings, local landowners, merchants, and religious institutions.
