Title: The Rolls and Register of Bishop Oliver Sutton 1280 – 1299 Vol VII by Rosalind M.T. Hill. The Lincoln Record Society Vol 69

Language: English and Latin

Summary: The Rolls and Register of Bishop Oliver Sutton 1280–1299, Volume VII, edited by Rosalind M. T. Hill, is the seventh volume in the eight-volume edition of the episcopal register of Oliver Sutton, who served as Bishop of Lincoln from 1280 to 1299. Unlike the earlier memoranda volumes, Volume VII is devoted almost entirely to ordination records covering the period 19 May 1290 to 19 September 1299.

Volume VII records the men admitted to the various grades of holy orders within the Diocese of Lincoln during the final decade of Bishop Sutton's episcopate. The entries document:

  • Candidates ordained as acolytes, subdeacons, deacons, and priests.
  • The dates and locations of ordination ceremonies, often held at major churches or during episcopal visitations.
  • The titles (benefices, religious houses, or patrons) under which candidates were ordained, demonstrating that they possessed the financial support required by canon law.
  • Candidates drawn from both secular clergy and religious orders, including monks, canons, and friars.
  • Occasional notes regarding dispensations, transfers, or irregularities affecting an individual's eligibility.

The volume is one of the richest surviving sources for studying:

  • The recruitment and training of the medieval English clergy.
  • Career progression through the four major orders.
  • Links between parish churches, monasteries, patrons, and the diocesan administration.
  • Geographical patterns of ordinations across what was then England's largest diocese.
  • Prosopographical and genealogical research, since thousands of named individuals appear in the register.
