Title: The Rolls and Register of Bishop Oliver Sutton 1280 – 1299 Vol VIII by Rosalind Hill. Lincoln Record Society 76

Summary: This eighth and final volume completes’ Hill's monumental edition of the surviving episcopal register of Oliver Sutton, one of the most important sources for the history of medieval England's largest diocese. The volume covers:

  • Institutions to benefices and promotions of heads of religious houses in the archdeaconries of Stow, Bedford, Leicester, Huntingdon, Buckingham, and Oxford.
  • Collations to cathedral dignities and prebends within Lincoln Cathedral.
  • Records of sequestrations and other administrative actions affecting ecclesiastical benefices.
  • A small section relating to sede vacante administration (governance during a vacancy in episcopal office).

Historical significance

The register provides detailed evidence for:

  • Appointment and movement of clergy.
  • Relations between bishops, monasteries, and parish churches.
  • Patronage networks among the nobility, religious institutions, and the Crown.
  • The practical administration of one of medieval Europe's largest dioceses.
  • Legal and financial aspects of church governance in late thirteenth-century England.

Volume VIII is particularly valuable for historians, genealogists, ecclesiastical scholars, and local historians because it documents hundreds of clerical appointments and administrative decisions across a large area of central and eastern England during the years 1280–1299. Together with the preceding seven volumes, it forms a comprehensive edition of Sutton's surviving register and remains a standard reference for the study of the medieval English Church.
