Title:  The Royal Navy in the Mediterranean 1915 to 1918

Summary: Paul Halpern’s work examines the strategic, operational, and political role of the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean during the latter part of the First World War, shifting focus away from the North Sea to a theatre that proved vital but often secondary in British planning.

Halpern argues that after the failure of the Gallipoli campaign (1915), the Mediterranean became a complex, coalition-dominated naval theatre where Britain had to balance limited resources, imperial commitments, and allied demands. The Royal Navy’s tasks expanded beyond decisive fleet battles to blockade enforcement, troop transport, convoy protection, and support of land operations.
