Title: The Sail and Steam Navy List by David Lyon and Rif Winfield. All the ships of the Royal Navy 1815 - 1889

Summary: This is a detailed reference work covering the ships of the Royal Navy from 1815 to 1889, a period in which Britain’s navy changed from a predominantly sailing force into a modern steam-powered fleet.

The book records ships that were in commission or intended for Royal Navy service during the period and provides, where the Admiralty records permit:

  • Ship and class names
  • Type and rate
  • Builder and place of construction
  • Ordering, keel-laying, launching and commissioning dates
  • Dimensions and tonnage
  • Armament
  • Machinery and propulsion for steamships
  • Changes of name, classification and role
  • Major career information
  • Final fate of each vessel — including loss, sale, conversion or disposal

The book is particularly valuable because 1815–1889 was one of the most dramatic technological transitions in naval history.
