Title: The Salmon P. Chase Papers. Volume 3. Correspondence, 1858 to March 1863

Summary: This volume spans from early 1858, when Chase began his second term as governor of Ohio, through March 1863, which includes the early years of the Civil War and Chase’s first period as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under President Abraham Lincoln.
The correspondence in this volume provides a primary-source view of Chase’s political and public life during a time of national crisis. It offers direct insight into Chase’s thought processes, political manoeuvring, and administrative work at a decisive moment in American history. The volume illuminates how a key Lincoln cabinet member responded to mounting conflict and how federal financial policy adapted as the Civil War unfolded.
