Title: The Ship of the Line. Vol II by Brian Lavery. Design, Construction and Fittings

Summary: Volume II is the technical companion to Volume I, concentrating on how British ships of the line were designed, built, equipped and operated, rather than primarily on their historical development. It covers roughly the age of sail from the 17th century through the early 19th century.

Main subjects:

  • Hull design. How naval architects developed the shape, proportions and dimensions of ships.
  • Hull construction. Timber, framing, planking and the practical methods used in dockyards.
  • Decoration. Figureheads, carved work and other decorative elements.
  • Masts, yards, sails and rigging. The complex systems required to propel and control a sailing warship.
  • Fittings and accommodation. Anchors, capstans, boats, cabins, stores and arrangements for officers and crew.
  • Armament. Guns, gunner's stores and the changing arrangements for carrying and operating artillery.

The central idea is that the ship of the line was not a static design. Its construction changed continually in response to naval warfare, available technology, materials, shipbuilding practice and operational requirements. Lavery uses individual ships and classes to demonstrate these changes rather than treating the Royal Navy's ships as one uniform type.

The book connects technical details with historical practice. Including, rigging, armament and accommodation are not treated simply as lists of equipment; they are shown as parts of a larger system that had to work aboard a fighting ship.

There are also substantial appendices containing period documents and specifications, including material relating to HMS Yarmouth, mast contracts, rigging and sail lists, methods of sheathing, boats, cabins and gun equipment.

If you're interested in Nelson's Navy, HMS Victory, eighteenth-century shipbuilding, rigging, guns or the practical workings of a wooden sailing warship, Volume II is heavily illustrated with plans, drawings, contemporary artwork and photographs of ship models.
