The Transformation of Anglicanism 1643 to 1660
VINTAGESTAN BOOKS Title: The Transformation of Anglicanism 1643 to 1660 with special reference to Henry Hammond Summary: Between 1643 and 1660 the Church of England moved from crisis to recovery, but not by simply “returning” to the pre‐Civil War status quo. Rather: Under the pressure of persecution and disestablishment, Anglicans developed new levels of theological self‐definition and apologetics (reason, Scripture, Church order). The liturgical and ecclesiological foundations of Anglicanism (episcopacy, Prayer Book, liturgical uniformity) were defended and refined, not abandoned. The Church deepened its identity as a “via media” between extremes: neither Puritan/Presbyterian nor Roman, but anchored in the historic episcopal and prayer-book tradition. Figures like Henry Hammond played a pivotal role in articulating and sustaining this identity: he provided learned theological resources, defended the order of the Church, and thus helped ensure that when restoration came, the Church of England was ready. The transformation is thus both reactive (against crisis) and proactive (building robust doctrine and identity).
