Title: The Trireme Project. Operational Experience 1987 – 90. Lessons Learnt

Summary: The Trireme Project: Operational Experience 1987–90. Lessons Learnt (1993), edited by Timothy Shaw, reports the results of sea trials conducted with Olympias, the full-scale reconstruction of an ancient Greek trireme. The project aimed to test long-standing theories about how classical Athenian warships were built, rowed, maneuverer, and used in combat. The Olympias trials strongly supported the idea that the classical Greek trireme was a fast, highly manoeuvrable warship operated by a disciplined and extensively trained crew. The project validated many traditional interpretations of ancient naval warfare while revealing that crew skill and coordination were even more important than previously assumed. It became one of the most influential examples of experimental archaeology applied to maritime history.
