Title: The Washing of the Spears by Donald R. Morris. The rise and fall of the Zulu nation

Summary: This is a detailed history of the rise of the Zulu Kingdom under Shaka Zulu and its eventual defeat by the British in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. The book is not simply a military history. Morris uses the story of the Zulus to examine the interaction between African state-building, military power, internal politics, and European colonial expansion. Its central arc is the transformation of the Zulus from a relatively small chiefdom into a formidable kingdom under Shaka, followed decades later by their confrontation with the British Empire and the destruction of their independence.
