Title: Thonet. Classic Furniture in Bent Wood and Tubular Steel by Alexander von Vegesack

Summary: This book by Alexander von Vegesack is a comprehensive historical and visual study of the furniture produced by Michael Thonet and his company. It traces the evolution of Thonet design from early 19th-century experiments with bentwood to the modernist tubular steel furniture of the 20th century.

At its core, the book argues that Thonet revolutionised furniture making by perfecting the technique of steam-bending wood. This innovation enabled the first true large-scale industrial production of furniture light, durable, elegant, and affordable marking a decisive shift from handcrafted pieces to mass production.

Vegesack presents Thonet as a pivotal force in design history bridging craft and industry, and later connecting traditional woodworking with modernist materials like steel helping define what we now recognise as modern furniture.
