The book explores numerous “vanished kingdoms”, including places such as Burgundy, Prussia, Aragon, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Galicia, Pomerania, Silesia, and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Davies explains how wars, dynastic marriages, nationalism, religious conflict, economic change, and the ambitions of larger neighbouring powers caused these states to disappear.
A major theme is that political borders are constantly changing. The disappearance of a state does not necessarily mean that its culture or people disappear. Languages, traditions, architecture, memories, and regional identities often survive long after the political entity itself has gone.
Davies also challenges the idea that modern European nations are the natural or inevitable outcome of history. He shows that Germany, Poland, Italy, and other modern states could have developed very differently if particular wars, treaties, or political decisions had gone another way.
The book encourages readers to look beyond today's map of Europe and understand the layers of history hidden beneath modern national boundaries.
